Monday medical scheduled: Celtic on verge of early January signing – report
Celtic are on the verge of completing an early signing ahead of January after RB Leipzig defender Marvin Compper is scheduled to have a medical in Glasgow on Monday, according to a report.
German news outlet Sport Buzzer claimed on their website that Compper, 32, is due to agree terms to a deal that keeps him at Parkhead until 2020
The Daily Mail has previously reported that Compper had already jetted into Glasgow to be given a VIP tour of Celtic Park and it now seems that he is on his way to becoming Brendan Rodgers’ latest signing in a deal said to be worth £900,000.
Celtic have struggled defensively this season with Dedryck Boyata, Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic all struggling for fitness and form.
The 4-0 hammering at Hearts on Sunday proved that Rodgers needs to not only add depth to his centre-back options but also improve the quality of them.
Compper has played a large role in helping RB Leipzig become one of the top teams in the Bundesliga but has since found himself struggling for first-team football.
Football Insider verdict
Rodgers has made it clear that he wanted a new centre-back in January and now it seems that his wish has been granted with Compper nearing a move to Parkhead within just weeks’ time. The one-time Germany international should bring a lot of experience to the Celtic first-team as well as give Boyata and Simunovic a much-needed rest from first-team duties. Rodgers shouldn’t stop with Compper though. If the Celtic manager really wants to improve his side then he should definitely go out for one more centre-back who can really challenge the existing players at Parkhead. Compper won’t be available to play in the Europa League so that should be something to consider.
