Chelsea midfielder Jacob Maddox is set to sign for Southampton on a permanent deal after agreeing personal terms and undergoing a medical, Football Insider understands.
The Saints have been looking to bolster their midfield options throughout the January transfer window and, as revealed by Football Insider, had been in talks with the Blues over a loan deal for the 21-year-old.
A source at St Mary’s has told Football Insider that the club are now set to push through a permanent transfer before Friday’s deadline, with terms agreed and the player’s medical completed.
The promising midfielder spent the first half of the season on loan with Tranmere Rovers but his temporary spell did not go to plan, with just one appearance before the deal was terminated at the start of January.
It is understood that Maddox is keen to play regular first-team football in a bid to boost his development and sees Southampton as somewhere where he can achieve his goals.
The Saints have an excellent reputation of nurturing young talent, the likes of James Ward-Prose establishing themselves in the senior side after coming through the youth ranks.
Maddox, who has two caps under his belt for England’s under-20 side, has never played for Chelsea’s first-team, joining the setup at Stamford Bridge from Bristol City.
The majority of his senior appearances came at Cheltenham during a season-long loan back in 2018, with 44 matches under his belt.
In other Southampton news, it can be REVEALED that the club are set to terminate the contract of international colossus.
