Medical expert issues Lukasz Fabianski injury claim after West Ham latest

Lukasz Fabianski could face a late fitness test before West Ham take on Nottingham Forest on Sunday (14 August) after his hip injury.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Fabianski, 37, limped off to be replaced by Alphonse Areola during West Ham’s 2-0 loss against Man City last week (7 August) after suffering a knock to his hip.

Speaking post-match and quoted by football.london, manager David Moyes revealed the Poland international was “limping badly” but reassured fans that the injury is “not maybe as bad as we felt”.

Dinnery suggested Moyes is facing a “50:50 call” prior to Sunday’s match – with a late fitness test possible.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “David Moyes referred to it as an injury to his hip region, and it certainly affected his ability to move his leg.

“For the most part, these injuries are fine. With a little bit of work over a week, then potentially yes – we can see Fabianski returning against Nottingham Forest.

“However, there are always exceptions to the rule. Raphinha had a similar injury, spent a month on the sidelines and even spent a month in hospital.

“It’s never straightforward – not every injury is the same. Fabianski is also a goalkeeper, meaning a large part of his role involves being on the floor, diving at players’ feet or to the left and right.

“West Ham may be able to put some padding in that area to protect him from further damage.

“I’d say at this moment it’s probably a 50:50 call. It could be that David Moyes makes a late decision, but they’ve got Areola waiting in the wings if a fitness test is failed.”
