Medical expert: John McGinn can’t cope with ‘alien’ injury
John McGinn can use his first-ever hamstring injury at Aston Villa as a “learning curve” to test his body’s recovery rates.
That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
McGinn has been out of action for Aston Villa since the start of the month, when he suffered a hamstring strain in the 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

Two weeks later when Villa lined up to face Leeds United in the Premier League, McGinn joked that he was “bored” and that “it’s the first time I’ve done my hamstring, at 28 years old”.
Dinnery insists that Villa will take extra caution on McGinn’s first-ever hamstring injury as it is something that can easily be re-injured if not treated properly.
“No injury has a higher percentage of re-injury or recurrence rate than hamstring injuries,” Dinnery told Football Insider.
“It’s the first time McGinn has suffered this type of injury so it will take more management than usual as it’s going to be fairly new and alien to him.
“He’s not a player that has suffered many major time loss injuries or absences.
“This can also be an opportunity and a learning curve for him as a player to learn how his body responds and how quickly it can recover from this setback.

“But there’s always going to be a degree of caution while working through these injuries and maybe even more so in this case.
“As he works through his progression protocols, McGinn is probably looking towards the start of February as a return date.”
