Medical Insider issues ‘absolute’ claim on Emiliano Martinez absence after Aston Villa twist

There is “absolutely” no issue with Emiliano Martinez returning to action for Aston Villa against Man United on Sunday (6 October).

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

Martinez suffered a head injury after colliding with Tyrone Mings during Aston Villa’s 4-0 loss to Newcastle United last weekend (29 October).

The 30-year-old tried to continue but was forced off shortly afterwards when he experienced discomfort collecting a routine cross.

The handling of the incident led the PFA to release a statement on Monday (31 October), as relayed via Sky Sports, to call for the introduction of concussion substitutes.

He took to Twitter the day after the game to play down the injury and insist he will be ready for the Man United game.

“In terms of the enhanced care protocols, you can effectively return to play within six days, on that sixth day, as long as you progress through each stage of that recovery symptom-free,” Dinnery told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“With regards to the protocols, there’s absolutely no issue with that at all.

“Aston Villa played at St. James’ Park on the Saturday, they don’t play at Villa Park against Man United until the following Sunday.

“There’s absolutely no issue in regards to that. Providing there isn’t an episode between now and through those various stages of recovery.”

Aston Villa

Martinez has been Aston Villa’s undisputed number-one goalkeeper since his arrival from Arsenal in the summer of 2020.

The Argentina international has kept 30 clean sheets in 89 games across all competitions for the Midlands giants.
