‘Mentality monster’ – Tottenham fans dazzled by starter who won 100% of his tackles vs Newcastle

Tottenham supporters were wowed by Cristian Romero’s match-saving performance as they drew 2-2 with Newcastle on 2 December.

Spurs came back twice to draw with Newcastle in a tetchy game at St James’ Park.

In an uninspiring performance, Destiny Udogie was one of the many underwhelming players for Tottenham as Thomas Frank‘s side were lucky to come away with a point.

The Lilywhites largely have Romero to thank for a much needed point on the road, as fans were quick to praise the defender for a marvellous display.

Romero has struggled with a few minor injuries for Tottenham this season, but was on top form under the lights at St James’ Park.

The World Cup winner partnered Kevin Danso in defence and was everywhere to cut out any signs of Newcastle attacks, making five clearances and five recoveries.

The Argentine also won all three of his tackles, including a last man challenge to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity.

His heat map, courtesy of Football Insider’s data partnership with Opta, captured his sweeper role for Spurs, as he covered an immense amount of ground to limit the Toon’s attack.

The 27-year-old was also superb with the ball, completing 34 of his 40 passes with an accuracy rate of 85 per cent and delivering one key pass.

Yet, it was Romero’s incredible efforts on goal that thrilled Tottenham supporters as he scored both a bullet header and a bicycle kick to get Frank’s side back into the game on two occasions.

Spurs fans were elated with his display and were quick to praise their captain’s heroic efforts against the Magpies, with one supporter saying: “Cristian Romero is a mentality monster.” with another adding: “Cristian Romero is the best player in the world.”
