Micky Hazard: This is how dogged Tottenham secured victory v Southampton

By Will Butcher

Micky Hazard is on cloud nine after seeing Tottenham hold on to a narrow 2-1 win against Southampton at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side came under huge pressure in the second half, after going into the break two goals to the good thanks to strikes from Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

Former Spurs ace Hazard claimed on his personal Twitter account that his old side’s defensive rearguard was key, as the north London outfit had to “dig in and fight for the win”.

Spurs strolled into the lead during the first half, despite the loss of top scorer Harry Kane to an ankle injury last time out against Millwall.

Denmark international Eriksen broke the deadlock, as he found the bottom corner of Fraser Forster’s net with a left-footed drive from around 25 yards out.

Alli then continued his sublime form in front of goal by doubling Spurs’ lead, sending England teammate Forster the wrong way from the penalty spot to score his 17th goal of the season.

Midfielder James Ward-Prowse clawed a goal back for Claude Puel’s Saints in the second half, setting up a nervy finale to the match but Spurs held firm to secure all three points.

The win sees Spurs go two points clear of third placed Manchester City, but they remain 10 points behind Antonio Conte’s league leaders Chelsea.
