Middlesbrough fans deliver instant reactions to Rob Edwards appointment

Middlesborough supporters have reacted to the news that Rob Edwards has become the club’s new head coach.

The Boro have been searching for a new permanent manager since sacking Michael Carrick at the start of June.

Carrick spent two and a half years at the club but was unsuccessful in his attempts to promote them back to the Premier League.

The North East side were last in England’s topflight back in the 2016/17 campaign and finished 10th in the Championship last season.

Boro support on board with Edwards appointment

Edwards has had recent success in the Championship when he led Luton Town to an unexpected promotion to the Premier League just two years ago.

The Hatters though were immediately relegated back to the second tier under Edwards and the 42-year-old left the club in January.

Edwards is now back in management with the task of making Middlesborough promotion contenders again.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl was also linked with the managerial vacancy, but Boro posted on X (24 June) the news that the club had officially announced Edwards as their new boss.

Supporters were quick to react to the breaking news with one replying to the post: “Adi could get you promoted himself, that’s some appointment that.”

Boro only finished four points outside the play-off places last season, so Edwards is inheriting a squad capable of pushing for a top six finish.

Consistency was a major problem for Carrick in his time at the club and they did finish last season poorly with just one win from their last six matches.

After leaving Luton 20th in the Championship in January, in a campaign which ended in relegation for the Hatters, Edwards needs to get off to a good start at the Riverside or doubts over his appointment could start to speculate amongst supporters.

Edwards’ record at Luton

Edwards achieved what seemed impossible at Luton in bringing Premier League football to Kenilworth Road.

Middlesborough will have bigger resources and greater expectations in their hopes of returning to the top division.

Following the expiry of loan spells to four players and the departure of Anfernee Dijksteel after six years at the club, Edwards will need to dip into the transfer market.
