Mikey Johnston ‘won’t go back to Celtic’ after West Brom spell ends – expert
Mikey Johnston will leave Celtic for good following his loan move to West Brom.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie admitted Johnston is a “damn good player”, but does not have the character to thrive at Parkhead.
The winger, whose deal with Celtic is set to expire in the summer of 2025, completed a six-month loan to the Championship Baggies and has since notched three goals in seven league outings.
His latest goal was a sensational one in front of the TV cameras in Friday’s 2-1 win over Coventry City to provide further evidence of his improvement in recent months.
The 24-year-old has been blighted with injuries since his making his senior debut in 2017 and made just three league starts for the Hoops this season before his move to West Brom.
Celtic loan star Mikey Johnston ‘will depart the club permanently‘
McAvennie has predicted that Johnston will end his time with the Glasgow giants at the end of this season and claimed he’d fare better in the Championship than Scotland.
“He’s not coming back to Celtic at all,” he told Football Insider.
“My God, he scored two goals [for West Brom], but he can do that up in Scotland.
“He scored two against Dundee and all of a sudden he was the best thing since sliced toast!
“It was incredible.
“He’s been at Celtic for years and he wasn’t getting into the team.
“There’s no doubting the boy’s talent.
“But when it comes to it at Celtic, that atmosphere and the thing that drives people doesn’t encourage him.

“He goes into himself. I thrived on that, but Mickey doesn’t.
“He’s a damn good player and the Championship is a good level for him.”
