Mills cites Ferdinand as Celtic set sights on English goalscoring colossus

Kyle Hudlin could not rely on his towering 6ft 9in frame to be a success at Celtic, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England full-back pointed to the example of Les Ferdinand to show you do not need to be tall to be good in the air.

Football Insider revealed last week (3 September) Celtic have set their sights on signing Hudlin from Solihull Moors.

The Englishman, 21, has scored 10 times in 39 games, including 23 starts, for the National League clubs across all competitions.

He is out of contract with the Midlands club at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Asked whether Hudlin could be a good Celtic signing, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It all depends how good he is with the ball at his feet.

“You look at his record and it’s at Solihull Moors. Going to Celtic would be a huge step up especially with the pressure and everything that comes with it.

“Are Solihull playing direct football where they just lump it up to him?

“Peter Crouch is actually a very good footballer. For his size, Crouchy actually wasn’t that good in the air. When you look at him he is quite skinny, quite scrawny.

“You think of someone like Les Ferdinand at 5ft 11in..If you’re going to play high balls into someone, who would you rather have Crouchy or Les Ferdinand? There’s almost a foot difference.

“He has to be good enough. Height alone might get him noticed but he has to be good enough.

“He’s the tallest outfield player in Britain, I’d rather be the best footballer in Britain or have the best goalscoring record. I’m not sure just being tall gets you many merits in football.”

In other news, a £4.5m ace could be forced out of Celtic due to a Parkhead “revelation”.
