Mills: Leeds can spend big before Monday night as ‘£300m’ verdict issued

Danny Mills has suggested it would cost Leeds United £25million to improve their starting XI.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender claimed the club will have earned £300million if they stay up this season and should have no issues with splashing the cash on the right player this month.

Chief executive Angus Kinnear wrote in programme notes on Saturday (22 January), as relayed by the Yorkshire Evening Post there was little value for money in the current market.

He insisted new additions “would block youngsters’ development” with Joe Gelhardt, Leo Hjelde and Lewis Bate all emerging from the academy.

“That can be true,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“You only want to bring players in who are significantly better than what you’ve got or are significantly better than you think they’re going to be.

“There’s no point spending money on like-for-like so I get it from that perspective.

“But eight-figures is not that much. £10million is not a huge amount in this day and age. You’re looking at loan deals with loan fees at that sort of price.

“You get £150million two seasons running for staying in the Premier League, that’s £300million.

“To spend £15million, £20million or £25million, that’s not a huge amount if it’s going to improve your squad. If you want to improve your squad it’s going to cost that.”

Leeds United

Leeds United are yet to add to their senior squad in the January window.

They brought in winger Dan James from Man United and left-back Junior from Barcelona Firpo last summer (2021).

In other news, Leeds United have been told to accept a possible ‘£27million’ bid after a Phil Hay reveal.
