Mills issues ‘ridiculous’ Newcastle claim after news today

Newcastle United will need to produce “top-four form” after Christmas if they want to avoid relegation from the Premier League, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Middlesbrough and England full-back insisted Newcastle are in real trouble after failing to beat Norwich City in midweek.

As quoted by Chronicle Live today (3 December), Eddie Howe insisted there was a lot to take from the 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park.

They host Burnley tomorrow (4 December) in what Mills has claimed is a must-win game.

“They are going to have to go some to stay up because their fixture list is tough between now and the end of the transfer window,” he told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They are on seven points now and if they beat Burnley it’s 10. Will they get any more points before Christmas? I’m not convinced they will.

“You can’t keep making silly errors and mistakes. You can say they worked hard against Norwich. I’m sorry, it’s Norwich. Apart from Newcastle, they are the worst team in the Premier League.

“If you don’t beat Burnley, it’s eight points if they get a draw. Form says they won’t win any of the next four games.

“At the halfway point they could have eight points. You’d then have to get 30 points from the next 19 games. That’s ridiculous.

“To expect a team to go from being that far down to go to what West Ham are doing and they want to finish in the top four.

“Where does that form come from? To go from bottom of the table form to top-four form. And that’s to finish 17th and get 38 points, probably.

“I don’t see it happening. If they don’t beat Burnley that also allows Burnley to get a bit further ahead of them.”
