Mohamed Salah: This is the ‘only reason’ Liverpool talks have stalled after new twist – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested the “only reason” Mohamed Salah has not signed a new contract at Liverpool is because he wants a fresh challenge.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider’s Russell Edge, claimed the 29-year-old would not leave Anfield based on financial or footballing reasons.

Speaking to Four Four Two on Friday (22 April), Salah revealed “not everything (is) about the money” in the ongoing contract negotiations.

He admitted he “does not know” how confident to be about signing a new deal in a fresh twist to the ongoing saga.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (9 April) that Liverpool were confident of a breakthrough in talks, with the winger set to compromise on his £500,000-a-week wage demands.

Whelan insisted Salah must be thinking about a new experience after five years on Merseyside.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I mean, the money will be there if he wants it. They’re a successful football side so on footballing terms, that’s something that is not in question.

“They’re a successful side, they’ve been winners over the years while he’s been at the football club.

“The only other thing I could put my mind on, thinking of those comments, is that maybe he wants to experience something else in a foreign country. An opportunity to play at another club in Europe.

“It can only be Barcelona, Real Madrid or Paris St-Germain because I don’t think Bayern Munich can afford him. Man City can but I don’t think he’d go across to Manchester.

“That is the only way I can really fathom that he would want to leave Liverpool. On the footballing side, they’re successful, one of the best teams in the world.

“The money is there if he wants it. It’s only maybe it’s a choice of culture and experience. This is something to do with their agent. Contract talks need to be talked about.

“The thing is Liverpool want to keep him. It’s whether he wants to say. If he’s got a desire to play abroad, he’s 29 now, maybe this is the time. Coming into the end of his contract, one year, this is something that they’ve got to come to agreements with.”
