Monk lays into Wagner in wake of brawl during Leeds defeat to Huddersfield

By Alex Stevens

Garry Monk has slammed David Warner for not showing him enough respect in the final minutes of Leeds’ 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield on Sunday.

Michael Hefele bagged an 89th minute winner for Huddersfield to spark wild celebrations among supporters, players and coaching staff at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Terriers manager David Wagner raced down the pitch to celebrate with his players and crossed paths with his opposite number Monk on his way back to the dugout.

The Leeds manager reacted to Wagner entering his technical area by standing his ground and appearing to block the German and, as the two rivals squared up, a brawl ensued involving both benches and groups of players, and the managers were both sent off.

Monk was unimpressed by the conduct of Wagner and claimed he lacked class in his wild celebrations.

“The only thing I’ll say is I’ve been brought up with the values of having humility, having respect and having class,” said Monk, as quoted by the BBC Leeds matchday blog on Sunday (2.41pm)  ‘I don’t stand for [a violation of] that, ever.

“They’re the values I hold my team to and if someone else goes against those values, I think it’s wrong. Those are the values I hold dearly and he (Wagner) can answer his own actions. But those are the values I hold myself to.”

The defeat for Monk’s side mean Huddersfield climb above their Yorkshire rivals to fourth in the table, with the visitors dropping down one place to fifth.

Leeds had looked good for a draw after Chris Wood cancelled out Izzy Brown’s opener with his 21st goal of the season and 18th in league competition.

But Hefele’s late strike ensured a win for Huddersfield which sees them leapfrog Monk’s side.

In other Leeds news, fans have reacted hilariously to Gaetano Berardi’s role in the late brawl against Huddersfield.
