Monk makes admission about potential of Leeds squad, every fan will love this
By Alex Stevens
Garry Monk has claimed that his Leeds team are still at the very start of their development and have barely even scratched the surface of their potential.
Monk has transformed the fortunes of the Yorkshire giants since taking over last June and overhauling the squad.
He has shipped out experienced players like Sol Bamba, Giuseppe Bellusci, Toumani Diagouraga and Luke Murphy, and demoted hit-and-miss 20-somethings such as Marco Silvestri and Liam Cooper.
Monk oversaw 11 new signings last summer, many of whom have proved to be huge successes, including Pontus Jansson, Kyle Bartley, Liam Bridcutt, Luke Ayling, Hadi Sacko, Eunan O’Kane, Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez.
The former Swansea manager has also fast-tracked academy products Ronaldo Vieira and Kalvin Phillips in a complete overhaul that has paid huge dividends.
The team that finished 13th in the league last season are fifth in the Championship after 30 matches of the current campaign and well placed to challenge for promotion.
Monk was asked on Thursday afternoon about the development of his squad in comparison to “a couple of months ago,” as quoted on the personal Twitter account of Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Lee Sobot.
The manager ranked Leeds at ‘1’ on a scale of 1-10 earlier in the season and claimed “we are at one and a half now”.
The manager’s belief that there is still a huge amount of untapped potential in the players at his disposal will delight supporters, who have been won over by the 37-year-old manager following years of mediocre league campaigns.
Leeds overcame a difficult start to the season to mount a promotion campaign built on consistency league fixtures.
Monk’s side are well established in the play-off spots, seven points ahead of Norwich in seventh, going into their league clash against Cardiff at Elland Road on Saturday.
In other Leeds team news, the club came within a whisker of signing this forward on deadline day.
