‘I’m staggered’ – Murty makes honest admission after Rangers appointment
Graeme Murty has revealed he was “staggered” that Rangers offered him the chance to take the reins until the end of the season – and admitted it was “surreal” that such a big club would give him an opportunity.
Murty had taken charge of the side following Pedro Caixinha’s sacking in October and was expected to step aside in January for a permanent successor but has now been given the chance to win the job for himself.
The 43-year-old only joined the Ibrox giants in August 2016 but has already had two stints in charge of the first-team after Mark Warburton and Caixinha left the club.
Murty also revealed that there was “no way” he could have possibly turned he opportunity down.
“I really want to move forward and repay the faith the board have shown in me because I’m staggered they have,” Murty said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“Why? The scale of the club, its history – and because it is real now as well.
“I honestly didn’t think I was in the running at all but the board said they liked the job I was doing and the way I was handling everything.
“It’s still a little bit surreal a club of this stature would give me this opportunity but there’s no way, in good conscience, I could turn it down.”
The Gers travel to Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon to face Steve Clarke’s Kilmarnock and will be desperate to pick up three points and put pressure on Celtic and Aberdeen before they meet at Celtic Park.
The Light Blues are in third in the Scottish Premiership and trail Aberdeen by three points with leaders Celtic five points further ahead.
After the clash with Killie, Murty’s Gers have fixtures with Motherwell and Celtic to navigate before the end of 2017.
In other Rangers news, four new signings are on the cards in January after the appointment of Graeme Murty until the end of the season.
