Graeme Murty: This is what I learned about Rangers in defeat v Kilmarnock
Rangers manager Graeme Murty has blasted his side after conceding two “poor goals” against Kilmarnock as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Rugby Park.
The Gers took a first-half lead through Declan John before two goals in two minutes from ex-Rangers striker Kris Boyd secured the points for Steve Clarke’s side.
The result leaves the Gers needing to put together a long run of wins to have any chance of salvaging anything from the league campaign.
Murty was unhappy with his side’s inability to do “basic stuff” as he slammed their performance in his first game since being given the manager’s job until the end of the season.
“The two goals are poor goals, basic stuff, and we need to get better at the basic stuff, we need to get better at defending our goal and give Wes more protection than we did,” Murty said, as quoted by Rangers’ official website.
“I said at half-time that what we didn’t want to do is give them opportunities in the box, no silly free-kicks, no opportunity for them to build momentum.
“And for the first 10 minutes all we did was give them the ball, give free-kicks away and allow them to load it in the box.
“As I’ve just said I didn’t think we were clinical enough or ruthless enough in either box and I definitely learned that we need to do the basics better.”
The defeat was the second successive defeat for the Gers after losing to St. Johnstone last weeked and with fixtures against Motherwell and Celtic over the next week, Rangers will need to improve quickly if they aren’t to lose more ground in the league.
The result leaves Rangers facing a potential 14 point gap to leaders Celtic when they travel to Celtic Park on December 30th.
Rangers have yet to beat Kilmarnock this season after drawing 1-1 at Ibrox in what would prove to be Pedro Caixinha’s final game in charge.
In other Rangers news, four new signings are on the cards in January after the appointment of Graeme Murty until the end of the season.
