‘Naive’ Everton slammed by pundit over transfer blunder after Coleman update

Paul Robinson has slammed Everton for being “naive” over the importance of signing cover for Seamus Coleman this summer.

The former Spurs goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Toffees need another right-back after the Republic of Ireland international suffered yet another injury setback.

As the Liverpool Echo reported yesterday (September 8th), the Irish right-back is unlikely to face an extended layoff after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty.

Coleman sustained the injury in Ireland’s 1-1 World Cup qualifying match against Azerbaijan.

The 32-year-old is Everton’s first-choice right-back, with Jonjoe Kenny acting as cover after his Celtic loan last term.

The Daily Mail claim the Toffees launched a late bid to sign Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson.

However, Robinson claimed Everton should have moved quicker to secure an additional option.

“I think they were a bit naïve considering Seamus Coleman’s injury record,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Everton clearly wanted a right-back as they were heavily linked to Denzel Dumfries, but he ended up moving to Inter.

“Not getting a player of his quality and at his age They have missed out there, especially now Coleman is injured again.”

Dumfries signed for Inter Milan in August for £11.25million.

Coleman has a history of injury problems, missing eight league games last season with muscle problems.

His worst injury layoff came in March 2017 when a fractured leg kept the Ireland captain out of action for 45 consecutive league fixtures.
