‘Nelson Semedo to agree discount or leave Wolves amid contract talks’

Nelson Semedo will have to agree to a key change if he is to extend his contract at Wolves, a report from The Athletic reports.

The right-back made the move to Molineux back in the summer of 2020 when he joined from , and has gone on to become a key player for the club.

Semedo was named Wolves captain after Mario Lemina had been stripped of the role earlier this season, with the midfielder later going on to join Galatasaray.

Now it seems as though there is a chance that the 31-year-old could also follow him out of the door at the club in the summer, depending on how discussions over his future play out.

Nelson Semedo facing pay cut for new contract

As things stand, Semedo will be out of contract with Wolves at the end of this season, meaning he could leave the club for free in the summer.

According to this update from The Athletic, the club are keen to keep the right-back beyond the end of this season.

Talks over a new contract for Semedo at Molineux are said to have taken place already in a bid to resolve his future.

However, Wolves are apparently looking to reduce their wage bill, and so the former Barcelona man will have to agree to a pay cut if he is to remain at the club.

If he does not do that, then it’s expected that Semedo will likely leave Vitor Pereira‘s side at the end of this season.

Football Insider Verdict

The prospect of losing Semedo is not one you imagine will go down all that well around Molineux.

As captain, the right-back has emerged into a vital player for Wolves, and his presence would undoubtedly be a miss if he did move on, especially since he may not be the only departure.

Football Insider understands that the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa could still be interested in Matheus Cunha despite his recent outburst against Bournemouth.

Right now, the club are only just about keeping their heads above water in the Premier League, and losing more of their top performers will lead to questions about how much longer they can do that for.

Wolves fans are already unhappy with owners Fosun International over an apparent lack of investment, and losing Semedo due to a pay cut would surely only lead to those frustrations growing.

All of that may mean that the situation around the future of the right-back is likely to be a worrying one for those at Molineux.
