‘I knew I wasn’t going to play’ – Jonny Hayes makes honest Celtic admission
Jonny Hayes has revealed that he doesn’t regret signing for Celtic in the summer and admits that he knew he was not going to get a lot of football.
The former Aberdeen man was signed for £1million in the summer but has found it difficult to break into the Hoops first-team.
However, he has featured more recently and scored his first against for the Bhoys in the 3-0 win over his former club Aberdeen.
As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Hayes was well aware of how difficult it would be to break into a wining side when he joined the Hoops.
“I’ve never doubted the move at all”, he boldly stated. “It was always going to be difficult to adjust.
“I knew I wasn’t going to play straight away. I was coming to be part of the squad first and foremost and then to work my way into the team.
“We have a terrific manager and staff who give you confidence every day, so when you do get a chance, you’re ready to step up.”
The big challenge for Hayes now is to keep his place in the team, as he will be challenged by the likes of James Forrest and Patrick Roberts for a first-team position.
Celtic were comfortable enough winners over Aberdeen, aside from Hayes the other goalscorers were Lustig and Ntcham as the Bhoys moved eight points clear of the Dons and 11 points clear of Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
The Hoops are next in action against Aberdeen on Boxing Day before finishing off the first-half of the season with a game against their old rivals Rangers on Saturday.
Following his good performance against the Dons it will be intriguing to see how much game-time Jonny Hayes gets in those two matches.
