New Aston Villa signing ‘close’ after source’s update – pundit
Aston Villa will sign a new defender imminently after Diego Carlos’ injury blow.
That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider
On Tuesday (16 August) sources told Football Insider that Carlos is expected to be out for the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon.
The Premier League club announced on Monday (15 August) the defender will undergo surgery on the injury sustained in Saturday’s (13 August) win over Everton.
Kenny is now expecting Villa to announce a new defensive signing within the next few days.
“They have to go back into the market,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Gerrard signed this guy because he wasn’t impressed with the options he had there. Now he is going to miss the season or at least a big part of it.
“So you have to go and get someone else in, whether it is a loan or what. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had been working this week to get that one done.
“They don’t want to be left scrambling on deadline day so maybe that deal is already close.
“It’s such a blow for Villa and it is so unlucky for the player, it’s the last thing you need at this point of the season.”

Carlos moved to the Midlands giants this summer for £26million from Sevilla and looked set to be one of Steven Gerrard’s first-choice centre-backs.
Aston Villa finished 14th in the Premier League last season, 11 points behind the top seven.
