Nottingham Forest points deduction: Keith Wyness unhappy with ‘very, very harsh punishment’

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness believes the Premier League are under pressure to make sure any Nottingham Forest punishment is in accordance with ‘new’ financial rules being introduced.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested that the Premier League must also make sure that Forest’s punishment matches Everton.

Everton were deducted 10 points for their Profit and Sustainability Rules breach this season- reduced to six after a successful appeal.

Forest will now shortly begin their hearing with an independent panel after they were charged with exceeding the allowable losses for a Premier League side.

Wyness previously told Football Insider that Forest are in line to receive a ‘draconian’ six-point deduction for their breach.

The charge was made under Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules, but financial regulations in the top-flight could soon change after clubs met last month to discuss a new model that mirrors Uefa’s policy.

New Premier League finance rules could change punishment for Nottingham Forest – Ex-CEO

The new model could cap spending to a percentage of the club’s overall revenue – Uefa cap spending on wages, transfer fees and agent fees to 70 percent of a club’s income.

Critically, any punishments for financial breaches could change if the new regulations are introduced.

I think the Premier League are under pressure to make sure Forest’s punishment matches Everton,” Wyness told Football Insider.

There will be pressure from both sides to act as they have done with Everton, but also to act in accordance with the new rules that everybody knows are coming in.

So they Premier League have got themselves into a real bind.

It’s just been very poorly managed by the Premier League powers.

It seems to be at this particular round of charges that six points has become the benchmark.

But to me, six points is still a very, very harsh punishment.
