Talk of 14-team league leaves Rangers & another Scottish club raging – Sources

Rangers chiefs are deeply unhappy that the prospect of a 14-team league for next season is firmly back on the agenda, Football Insider has learned.

Following a weekend of extraordinary drama and a civil war between the Ibrox club and the SPFL, there is a real prospect of relegation being scrapped and SPL numbers bolstered by two promoted clubs.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider this possibility, which would see the season declared over, is not one that sits well with Rangers senior officials.

They have been pushing relentlessly over the last 72 hours for a new range of measures that would see prize money be distributed now via interest-free loans as well as the current campaign being completed.

The SPFL are on the back foot after their bodged 42-club vote last Friday amid accusations of serious foul play from Rangers.

They also believe a 14-team league is a ‘fudge’ for Celtic to be handed a ninth consecutive title without the season being completed and to prevent legal action from bottom club Hearts.

It would see runaway Scottish Championship leaders Dundee United be joined in an enlarged SPL next season by Inverness.

Rangers’ stance is shared by third-placed Dundee, who are at the heart of the ‘no’ vote that wasn’t.

Rangers are desperate to avoid a situation in which the season is called based on the current top 12 league standings.

Celtic have generally remained quiet during the unedifying saga, other than to claim it is their preference for the campaign to be completed if at all possible.

In other Rangers news, the coaches at Premier League giants have been convinced Ibrox midfielder could be a world beater.
