New wave of Newcastle fans unrest tipped after ‘strange’ Toon development – pundit
Paul Robinson claims it is “strange” Newcastle released a statement defending their transfer business this summer.
The former Tottenham stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest out of St James’ Park.
On 3 September, Newcastle released a statement defending their lack of spending this summer.
The club reiterated its commitment to a sustainable business model “built on the principle that we will spend what we have.”
The statement was ripped apart by furious Newcastle fans on social media with some of the anger coming from the fact that no one had put their name on the release.
Newcastle only signed Joe Willock from Arsenal this summer with Steve Bruce revealing the reported £25million fee will be paid in instalments.
Robinson insists Newcastle fans have every right to be annoyed with the club.
“They know there is unrest around the club,” Robinson told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs.
“It doesn’t take many bad results for there to be even more unrest. The fact they signed Willock was a big statement.
“That backed the manager, to spend so much on one player. As for the rest, it’s strange the club felt the need to put out a statement like that.
“It’s the club trying to communicate, whether the fans accept that or not. They have given a reason for where they are.

“But it’s not the first window where there has been nothing spent. Whether the supporters will see through that and they have used COVID as an excuse.
“But you look around the Premier League and see other clubs spending, so you can understand the unrest.”
