Newcastle about to make ‘huge statement’ after Botman update – pundit

The signing of Sven Botman could open the floodgates for more high-profile arrivals at Newcastle United.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider as the Magpies ramp up their attempts to bring new faces to the club,

On 30 December, the Daily Mail reported Newcastle have “stepped up” negotiations with Lille over a £30million move for Botman, 21.

It was also reported the defender is “keen” to join as the Magpies work to overhaul their defence.

Kenny claims Botman’s arrival could convince other players to join the club despite their perilous position in the Premier League.

“Look, it would be a huge statement,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“This is a guy who is a regular in a side that is in the Champions League knockout stages.

“If he was to sign for a team facing relegation, yeah, that would be a massive boost.

“For me, I think it would open the floodgates for more players. Once they get a couple in, others might want to come.

“They will see a team who are serious about staying up and who are working hard to achieve that.

“Obviously this guy will instantly improve the defence as well and that’s what Newcastle really need.”

Botman has made 16 appearances in all competitions for Lille so far this season.

His sole goal came on the opening day of the season in a 3-3 draw with FC Metz.
