Newcastle beat rivals to Kyle Fitzgerald signing as deal agreed – sources

Newcastle United are set to seal the signing of Republic of Ireland youth international Kyle Fitzgerald this week after beating several Premier League clubs to his signature, sources have told Football Insider.

The winger caught the eye of English top-flight sides after impressing for Galway United and at youth level for Ireland.

Newcastle lined up a deal for Fitzgerald, but have had to wait until he turned 18 this month to complete his signing.

Fitzgerald will link up with Newcastle’s Under-21 side as the club continue their policy of trying to sign the best young talent as they look to improve their academy set-up.

He made his senior debut for Galway in Ireland’s top division last year (2024) and was on the bench regularly throughout the 2023-24 campaign.

The left-footer can play on both flanks and is renowned for his pace.

Fitzgerald is set to join a strong Irish contingent at Newcastle – with the likes of Reece Byrne, Cathal Heffernan and Rory Finneran already on the books.

His development at St James’ Park will be overseen by countryman Diarmuid O’Carroll, who joined as Under-21 boss in September 2024.
