Newcastle chiefs set to ignore fans as ‘controversial’ plans revealed – pundit
Danny Mills has suggested Newcastle United will not abandon their plans for a “controversial” away kit next season even if there is a major backlash from fans.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Middlesbrough and England full-back claimed away kits are a “freebie” and as long as the home kit stays black and white fans will be fine.
The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope reported this week (12 May) that Newcastle are set to turn out in green and white away kit next season in a strip that resembles that of Saudi Arabia.
The new kit will raise some eyebrows after the new owners Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund had to prove there were no connections to the Saudi state when they took over last October (2021).
But the club and their new owners will see the strip as a way of raising revenue in Saudi Arabia as they look to raise vital funds so they can work within Financial Fair Play rules.
“It’s an unusual one,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“The fans wouldn’t buy into a red and white kit.
“This is the modern world we live in. We saw it when Cardiff went from blue to red. It’s not the first time people have made controversial kits.
“We’ll see if Newcastle fans buy into it. It’s an away kit so if they don’t lose the black and white stripes they will be ok.

“I don’t think they will listen to the backlash because it’s an away kit. If it was a home kit then it could be a disastrous move.
“We’ve seen in the past, the away kit and third kit are a bit of a freebie rather than club colours.”
