Newcastle complete ‘phenomenal’ Trippier deal as photos emerge and terms revealed – expert

Alex McLeish has claimed Kieran Trippier could be a “phenomenal” signing for Newcastle United.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 31-year-old would integrate into Eddie Howe’s starting XI “seamlessly”.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier today (5 January), Trippier was set to jet into Newcastle to complete a move worth a potential £18million from Atletico Madrid.

Trippier was then photographed at Newcastle Airport by aviation photographer Mark (@NCLairpics on Twitter) shortly after 13:00 today.

The Magpies have agreed to pay Atletico an initial £12million, with a further £6million agreed in add-ons and clauses.

McLeish insisted Trippier would bring some “brilliant experience” to the squad on Tyneside.

Discussing the relatively low transfer fee, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “His age will be something to do with it.

“But it’s still a phenomenal transfer fee. If Kieran’s still at the level he was, then it’s brilliant experience for the team that he’s going to.

“They will relish that experience. He will slip in there seamlessly if he’s still got his energy in his legs.

“He certainly won’t have forgotten how to play the football game in England. That could be a shrewd signing.”

Trippier has been a regular for Atletico Madrid since joining from Tottenham in 2019.

He has played 86 times for the Spanish giants and remained a regular starter for England.

The right-back started and played the full 90 minutes for Atletico in Saturday’s (1 December) 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.
