Newcastle could strike cut-price Digne deal after Kieran Maguire reveal – pundit

Newcastle United can seal a cut-price deal for Everton defender Lucas Digne this month.

That is the view of former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees position in relation to Financial Fair Play.

Everton, who are currently 15th in the Premier League, have already spent in the region of £30million on full-backs Nathan Patterson and Vitaliy Mykolenko this month.

Analysis from Football Insider finance expert Kieran Maguire revealed the Toffees were £35million behind their FFP target prior to this window.

The Merseyside club will look to help balance the books with the sale of France international Lucas Digne, whom they value at £30million.

A recruitment source told Football Insider (5 January) that Aston Villa have joined Newcastle in the race for the left-back.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, Robinson said: “Other clubs know the situation at Everton.

“The amount of money they have spent in recent time, including this window, is a problem. They are flying very close to FFP. They have obviously got to sell players and they have got to get the wage bill down.

“Regardless of who they bring in, clubs like Newcastle and Chelsea know they can sign Digne for a lesser price. I imagine Digne would command a bigger fee were Everton not in the situation they were in.

“Clubs know you can nick a player from Everton at the moment.”
