Newcastle enter talks with defender wanted by Leeds - report

By Harvey Byrne

Newcastle have entered talks with Bristol City over a deal for star left-back Joe Byran, according to a report.

The Mail have claimed on their live transfer blog (Tuesday, 4.52pm) that the Magpies are in discussions for the sought-after 23-year-old, who is also attracting interest from Championship duo Birmingham and Leeds.

However, it is also stated that a move to Newcastle could prove too hard to resist.

The Mail report follows on from Football Insider revealing on Tuesday afternoon that Rafa Benitez’ side were lining up a move for the Scotsman following Paul Dummett’s hamstring injury in Sunday’s defeat against Tottenham.

It is believed that scouts from the north east giants have been keeping tabs on Bryan for some time and they could now be forced into a move for the left-back following the injury to first team ace Dummett.

Leeds, meanwhile have added youngster Cameron Borthwick-Jackson to their side on loan from Manchester United following the departure of Charlie Taylor, but Gaetano Berardi has also suffered an injury blow this season.

Football Insider verdict:

Bryan is a good prospect in the Championship and will only get better at his age, but he will not be too much of a blow if Leeds do miss out on him. Despite being good going forward there are still some major concerns about the left-back’s ability to defend and it is expected that, that will get highlighted if he does make the step up to the Premier League. Meanwhile, Leeds have Borthwick-Jackson for the season and then they can decide on who they will bring in to replace him next summer depending on what division the club are in for the 2018-19 campaign.
