Newcastle eye transfer ‘revenge’: Alexander Isak update after ‘pure profit’

Newcastle United will look to take “revenge” on other clubs in the summer transfer window, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has said.

The Magpies have had a quiet period in the winter window, during which they did not sign a single first-team player.

That followed a summer window in which they were forced into the sales of exciting prospects such as Yankuba Minteh and Elliott Anderson to avoid breaching PSR regulations.

Despite that Newcastle were still limited with what they could spend in January, with new Man City signing Abdukodir Khusanov’s agent suggesting FFP issues impacted the Magpies missing out on the defender.

But after limiting their spending in this period, Maguire has indicated that will free Eddie Howe’s side up to invest more heavily in the summer, with less threat of PSR, allowing them to take advantage of others.

Speaking to The I, the football finance expert said: “This is forward planning. They don’t want to be in the position they were in the last week of June 2024, so perhaps the thinking is getting a couple of deals through now, which gives them more flexibility in June in terms of buying. Fans forget that if you sell now it will improve the situation.

“They got through to the end of last season by the skin of their teeth, it wasn’t pleasant for the club and they don’t have the benefit of the European money coming in this year so it’s a different budget.”

That, Maguire suggested, would be a way for Newcastle to take “revenge” over the restrictions they have had to work under in the market this season.

The Magpies did still sell players in the winter, with fringe players such as Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly leaving for Atlanta and Juventus respectively.

Given those players were apparently seen as having no book value with regards to PSR, they will be apparently be viewed as “pure profit” when it comes to those regulations.

It is suggested that will give them more scope to operate when it comes to signings in the summer transfer window, while also aiding contract negotiations with the likes of top scorer Alexander Isak.

Newcastle fans can be excited by fresh transfer update

Football Insider Verdict

It has been a tough period in the transfer market for the Magpies, but Eddie Howe and his side have coped well in spite of that.

Newcastle currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, and are currently in the hunt for European football.

Given this update suggests they will be able to be more active in the transfer window next summer, and therefore strengthen their squad suggests they could be even more competitive next time round.

Equally the prospect of agreeing a new contract with Isak will be hugely appealing given how important he is, and how heavily he has been linked with Arsenal.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak

Having this extra room to manoeuvre from a financial perspective should also help Newcastle agree a new deal with the striker, and ward off interest from elsewhere.

That of course will be another major boost for their squad, and one that will increase optimism they can put together a side for next season capable of making the next step forward.
