Newcastle fans fume at ‘absolutely stinking’ starter who lost six duels vs Brentford: ‘Please retire’

Newcastle fans have blasted Kieran Trippier and urged him to hang up his boots after his poor performance in their 3-2 loss to Brentford.

Trippier has been one of Eddie Howe‘s key men amid Newcastle‘s desire to compete with the world’s biggest clubs over the last few years.

The former England right-back has battled recurring injury concerns in recent times, however, with age not on his side anymore at 35-years-old.

Football Insider revealed last October that Howe wants Trippier to sign a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of this term.

It remains unclear whether he will stay at St James’ Park beyond this summer, with many fans content to see him depart following a dismal showing against the Bees on Saturday.

Kieran Trippier struggled as Newcastle lost 3-2 to Brentford

Newcastle were beaten 3-2 by Brentford on Saturday evening, despite taking the lead through Sven Botman in the 24th minute.

Vitaly Janelt and Igor Thiago both struck to put the visitors ahead just before half-time, and Bruno Guimaraes‘ leveller from the spot proved fruitless as Dango Ouattara won it for the Bees late on.

Trippier lined up at right-back for his 12th league start of the campaign, but was culpable for Brentford‘s 35th-minute equaliser as he allowed Ouattara too much space to cross superbly for Janelt to score.

The 35-year-old was then caught out of position in the build-up to the penalty that led to their second goal, as Ouattara raced past him and found Mathias Jensen, with his shot hitting Jacob Murphy’s arm.

Ouattara also made Trippier pay for a lack of concentration late on, as he left him in his wake on the left side of the Newcastle box and drove a shot through Nick Pope to win the game.

Trippier emerged from the game with just four duels won from 10 attempted and one accurate cross from five attempted, while he was dribbled past twice.

Howe’s job is under real pressure as Newcastle sit 12th in the top flight, 10 points away from fifth-placed Chelsea, and their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League through domestic performance are fading rapidly.

Many Magpies fans partly blamed Trippier for the loss, with one taking to X to say: “(Lewis) Miley and Tino (Livramento) can’t come back soon enough, Trippier is absolutely stinking.”

While another added: “Remember at the start of the season that whoever planned the squad thought Livramento as first choice RB AND backup LB, despite (him) being unable to complete a full season himself, was a good idea. Then we end up with Trippier, whose legs went 2 years ago, having to play. Pure negligence.

And one fan said: “Age catches up with us all. Trippier’s struggles are difficult to watch after everything he’s done for the club. Outstanding leader and player who helped transform the club when he joined. It’s been a season too far though.”
