‘A real player’, Fantastic’ – Newcastle fans rave over cameo performance v Manchester City

Newcastle United fans were left raving over the cameo performance of winger Christian Atsu in the club’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday.

The Magpies put in a spirited performance at St James’ Park against the league leaders, who chalked up their 18th consecutive Premier League win thanks to Raheem Sterling’s first half goal.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez had chosen to rotate his starting XI following their 3-2 win over West Ham, their first victory in 10 games, with five changes to the line up as well as a significant change in tactics.

One man who dropped to the bench despite starring against the Hammers was speed machine Atsu, who was given 20 minutes to try and inspire his team mates into securing an equalising goal against the table toppers.

However, despite the Magpies failing to find the all important goal, fans were still very impressed with what they saw from the Ghanaian winger, taking to Twitter to sing his praises and question why he had not started, as well as insisting he returns to the starting XI next time out.

Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:

Originally joining Newcastle on a season-long loan from Chelsea in the summer of 2016, he turned the move permanent a year later, and has gone on to make 16 appearances, score two goals and chip in with two assists for the Magpies on their return to the top flight of English football.
