Everton confirmed the signing of Lewis Gibson had been completed on Thursday – and Newcastle fans are mostly delighted to have got a reported decent fee for the defender.

The Toffees announced on their official Twitter account and official website that the 17-year-old centre-back had signed a three-year deal at Goodison Park and is set to join up with David Unsworth’s Under-23s squad ahead of next season.

Everton haven’t been afraid to splash the cash this summer, and have made considerable improvements to their development squad as well as their first-team.

Gibson is the fifth new addition to Unsworth’s Under-23 side as he joins Nathangelo Markelo, Anton Donkor, Boris Mathis and Josh Bowler in agreeing terms with the Blues.

Although Gibson was a highly-rated member of the Newcastle set-up, most of the fans aren’t too fussed about the defender’s sale..

Lee Ryder, the Chronicle’s chief sports writer has reported on his personal Twitter account last week that the centre-back had not training with the club since May due to the uncertainty around his future.

It was also understood that Everton had splashed £6million on securing Gibson.

Newcastle fans seem split on the deal, with some thinking that it’s best to keep hold of young talent, while others have hit out at him as he leaves.

In other Newcastle news, the Toon Army have dubbed this midfielder as the “next Xabi Alonso” as he heads to Tyneside for a medical.
