‘Oh great’, ‘Cost us points’ – Newcastle fans rage over ‘immense’ star’s reported blow

Newcastle United fans have taken to social media to react to news that Rob Elliot will be missing for the club’s clash against Brighton on Saturday due to a thigh injury.

The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has revealed via his personal Twitter account that the Republic of Ireland international has picked up a knock following Wednesday’s 1-0 home defeat against Manchester City, and will be forced to sit out at least the visit of the Seagulls.

The 31-year-old has been the first choice shot stopper for manager Rafael Benitez this season, aside from a four game spell where he was dropped in favour of Karl Darlow, with 16 appearances under his belt so far.

Fans were left fuming on Twitter with the news, with the Toon Army voicing their concerns over former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Darlow taking Elliot’s place in the starting XI after failing to convince during his four game spell in the first team.

Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:

Elliot is one of the club’s longest serving figures, having been at St James’ Park since 2011, but has just 68 appearances under his belt for the club in his six years of service.

Darlow meanwhile has turned out 51 times for the Magpies since joining from Nottingham Forest back in 2014, and spent much of last season as the first choice between the sticks.

In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are expected to submit an official bid for a Premier League forward in January.
