Newcastle fans will be fuming at 8-figure Longstaff transfer report – pundit

Alan Hutton has insisted Newcastle United fans would be furious if Sean Longstaff is sold before next week’s transfer deadline.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland defender admitted he could not understand why the Magpies have not tied the 23-year-old down to a new contract.

The Daily Mail claim (August 18th) the Magpies have placed a £10million asking price on Longstaff amid interest from Everton and Southampton.

The homegrown midfielder is out of contract next summer, meaning Newcastle risk losing him on a free.

Hutton suggested the midfielder’s situation would have the Toon Army fuming.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “These are the things that really annoy the supporters.

“When they’re seeing their homegrown players come through and then get sold on or whatever.

“He did kind of burst onto the scene and then it’s just kind of cooled off a little bit. It’s been difficult.

“The type of football that Steve Bruce plays and the formation that he plays might not suit him down to the ground.

“I just don’t think it’s something that the fans will be happy seeing. They’re not bringing anyone in and then there’s a possibility of these guys going.

“It’s not ideal. I don’t know why they wouldn’t want to sign him to a long-term deal. I don’t think it will go down well.”

Newcastle United

Longstaff has struggled for regular game time under Steve Bruce since the start of last season.

As revealed by Football Insider (27th August), Sean’s younger brother Matty is set to join Aberdeen on loan from Newcastle.
