Newcastle fans will rave over the memories in five greatest matches v Sunderland

Newcastle 2 – 0 Sunderland – 20/04/2008

A match which extended the Magpies’ unbeaten streak over their local rivals back to 2000, this was a game in which Michael Owen showed the finishing class he struggled to demonstrate for the majority of his career on Tyneside.

Opening the scoring after just four minutes, Newcastle were dominant throughout and should have had more than Owen’s brace, scoring his second from the penalty spot.

It will never be considered a classic game, and it certainly lacked the drama of a Tyne-Wear derby – but it was an enjoyable afternoon for the Toon Army who saw their side well and truly on top at St James’ Park.
