Another which will not be considered a classic match by any means, but will be fondly remembered for Ryan Taylor’s sumptuous match winning free kick.
It was a game in which Sunderland may be able to claim they dominated, although the prime goal scoring opportunities fell the way of the Magpies.
Joey Barton saw a goal denied by a Sebastian Larsson handball, before Taylor hit the ball sweetly from a set play and while namesake Steven tried to get his head on the cross-come-shot, it drifted into the far side of the net, giving birth to the ‘Ryan Taylor, over the wall’ chants which have been heard around St James’ Park in recent years.
