Newcastle fans will rave over the memories in five greatest matches v Sunderland
Newcastle 3 – 2 Sunderland – 23/10/2005
A real classic of a game which was settled by a worthy winner.
The Magpies came up against a determined Sunderland side who, as before, had failed to taste victory over the Magpies since 2000.
Newcastle looked in the ascendancy for much of the game, but despite taking the lead twice, Shola Ameobi scoring two of his many goals against the Black Cats which helped earn him the nickname ‘The Mackem Slayer’, Sunderland were able to peg them back immediately, four of the five goals scored across seven minutes.
Shay Given pulled off some crucial stops before Turkish midfielder Emre stepped up and curled home a perfectly placed free kick just after the hour mark – not a bad way to score your first Newcastle goal!
