Newcastle fans will rave over the memories in five greatest matches v Sunderland
Sunderland 1 – 4 Newcastle – 17/04/2006
A bittersweet afternoon in the memory of Newcastle fans, who saw their side demolish their rivals in their own ground but also witnessed the end of club legend Alan Shearer’s career.
The Magpies were actually second best for the first 45 minutes, Justin Hoyte giving Sunderland a deserved lead at the Stadium of Light before the visitors turned the game on its head in just over one second half minute.
Michael Chopra capitalised on some woeful defending to score just 15 seconds after coming on as a substitute, and less than 60 seconds later Shearer was smashing home from the penalty spot to score his 206th – and final – Newcastle goal, with injury forcing him off later in the game.
Charles N’Zogbia and Albert Luque proceeded to put the icing on the cake for a memorable clash for the Newcastle faithful.
