Newcastle fans worried Amanda Staveley taking over rivals – pundit

Newcastle United fans are concerned Amanda Staveley will help revive a Premier League rival following her unexpected exit.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland international Alan Hutton believes ‘fans want to see what’s best for their club’ now that Staveley, 51, has left.

The businesswoman played a huge role in the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s takeover of the club from beleaguered ex-owner Mike Ashley back in 2021.

Staveley and her partner Mehrdad Ghodoussi owned ten per cent of the club and were widely regarded as the face of the Saudi regime but has since sold her shares in a surprise move.

Amanda Staveley could part-buy Tottenham after quitting Newcastle United

The October 2021 move wasn’t Staveley’s first foray into football—she had previously played a key role in brokering the £210 million sale of Manchester City to Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour in 2008.

She is expected to remain active in the sport.

“It’s going to depend what she’s bringing to the table”, Hutton told Football Insider.

“You can’t argue with what she’s done at Newcastle, she came in, they’ve done really well, and while she’s been there they go to the Champions League.

“There has been investment, so it really depends on what team we’re talking about and who she’s looking at going into.

“I think the fans just want to see what’s best for their club, they want to see a good team on the pitch at the end of the week, they want to turn up and support them and want them to get into European competitions.

“If she’s able to achieve something similar wherever she goes, I’m sure their fans will back it.”
