Newcastle open talks over Alexander Isak deal – sources

Newcastle United are currently in talks with star striker Alexander Isak about signing a new contract at the club, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke explained that the north-east giants have been handed a major boost after the Sweden international publicly came out claiming he’s happy with the Tynesiders and loves the area.

Isak has recently been linked with a move away from St James’ Park following his outstanding season in the Premier League.

Football Insider revealed last month Arsenal have added the 24-year-old to a four-man shortlist of potential forward signings this summer.

The north-east giants are keen to hand Isak an improved deal that would bring him in line with the club’s top earners such as Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier.

The forward’s current contract at St James’ Park is set to run until 2028.

Isak enjoyed a fine campaign at Newcastle after scoring 25 goals in 40 games as the club secured a seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

That wasn’t enough to earn a European spot for next season, fueling the speculation around whether the likes of Isak and Bruno Guimaraes could push for a move this summer.

Football Insider previously revealed Arsenal have been told a £100million bid would likely be accepted for the Swedish forward.

Newcastle are believed to be toeing the financial fair play (FFP) line again, but they are keen to ensure Isak remains at St James’ Park this summer after opening contract talks with him.

But it’s a different story for fellow Tyneside star Guimaraes after Football Insider revealed on 8 June club chiefs are “anxious” about the prospect of the Brazilian midfielder leaving before his £100million release clause expires on 30 June.

In other news, Newcastle have agreed defender signing – it’s a “done deal”.
