Newcastle plan to accept ‘big Anthony Gordon offer’

Newcastle United are prepared to listen to “big” offers for Anthony Gordon as a result of his sudden downturn in performances so far this season.

Liverpool and Arsenal are both long-term admirers of the 24-year-old and could be tempted to lure him away from St James’ Park should he become available.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the Magpies could opt to sell Gordon while his stock remains high to maximise his price.

There is a feeling at Newcastle that they could improve on the England international in the transfer market, and work has begun to identify replacements.

This comes after Eddie Howe’s side drew 0-0 with Wolves at the weekend, with Gordon’s display a source of frustrating for the travelling Newcastle supporters.

Newcastle United open to offers for Anthony Gordon

Brown warned Football Insider last month that Gordon’s form is a problem for Howe with many of his big-name stars struggling to get going this season.

Now, the former scout believes Newcastle could be prepared to move the winger on for the right price as they continue to contest with financial concerns.

Newcastle are leaning towards letting him go,” he told Football Insider.

“They’re reaching a point now where the potential he has showed is not being fulfilled, he’s still wasteful and lacks the end product they would hope for.

“His goalscoring record is frankly awful, for somebody with his talent, pace and two good feet. His final pass, cross, whatever, has not been of a high enough standard.

“He’s still an important part of their side, but they could look to sell him for a big fee while his stock is still high and clubs will pay big money.

“Because if he continues like this, you’re stuck with an underperforming player, and the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal for example won’t be interested.

“There are other players out there who could offer more to Newcastle, especially if they had the money from selling Gordon to go and spend.

“It would help them with any of these PSR or FFP issues they’re still talking about as well, so it’s something they’ll definitely be considering.”

Eddie Howe makes two-man Newcastle transfer plan

Despite increased speculation about Gordon and other underperforming Newcastle stars, Howe remains keen to strengthen his squad this month.

Football Insider revealed on 16 January that Newcastle want a centre-back and left-back in the window’s closing stages to help ease their defensive concerns.

This comes as the Magpies have suffered several injuries to key defenders including Tino Livramento, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar in recent weeks.

Livramento is currently facing eight weeks out with a hamstring issue, while Schar is not expected back until April and Burn is soon set to return after a month on the sidelines.

These injuries have stretched Howe’s squad, with players asked to fill in in makeshift roles, but could force the club into the transfer market.
