Newcastle player ratings v Brighton: Under fire figure stars in 8/10 display

Goalkeeper and defenders

Karl Darlow – 8: Back into the starting XI in place of the injured Rob Elliot, he had a lot to prove after a match-deciding error in his last outing. He seemed confident between the sticks, claiming the ball from crosses and not spilling shots which came his way. Pulled off several impressive saves and was the Magpies’ surprise star man, having come under-fire as Elliot’s replacement.

DeAndre Yedlin – 6: Still firmly the club’s first choice right back, the speed machine made a shaky start on a slippery St James’ Park pitch. Booked on the hour mark for a needless challenge on Solly March.

Jamaal Lascelles – 7: A clean sheet is nothing to be scoffed at, but in reality it was a quiet day for the club captain. Controlled the back confidently and dominated the Brighton attack, while seeing a well taken header go wide at the other end of the pitch.

Ciaran Clark – 5: Back into the first team after being rested against Manchester City, he had a quiet first half as Brighton struggled to create too many chances. However when the ball did fall his way, the Republic of Ireland international failed to impress, with several misplaced passes straight to the Seagulls.

Paul Dummett – 7: After a first start since his injury layoff, Dummett may have been surprised to have kept his spot in the starting XI following the City clash. He demonstrated his defence nous, marshalling the left flank well, but struggled to have an impact in the Brighton half.
