Newcastle player ratings v Brighton: Under fire figure stars in 8/10 display

Joselu – 6: The Spanish striker has been much criticised on Tyneside since signing from Stoke City over the summer, but he showed why Rafael Benitez keeps starting him up front. His hold up play, some of the best he has displayed this season, brought his team mates into the game, against a physical Brighton defence.

Dwight Gayle – 7: Back into the starting XI to line up alongside strike partner Joselu, the diminutive forward did show signs of life in what was a quiet first half for the attackers. His movement proved difficult for the Brighton defenders to deal with, but he could not create the chances he would have wanted. Forced a good save out of Ryan with a flicked header, showing his all round striking ability.
