Newcastle player ratings v Brighton: Under fire figure stars in 8/10 display
Substitutes
Ayoze Perez – 5: Brought on with just under 20 minutes to play, the Spanish playmaker had little to no effect up front, operating in an unnatural right wing position before being pushed central late on. Showed no reason why he would return to the starting XI.
Jonjo Shelvey – 6: Dropped from the starting XI in favour of Merino and Hayden, the midfield maestro was brought on in the second half to try and inject some life into a lacklustre performance. His passing helped the Magpies build attacks quicker but he was not enough to find a way through the resolute backline of the visitors.
Jacob Murphy – 5: Was given 10 minutes to try and make a difference at St James’ Park, but he found opportunities down the right wing at a premium. The disappointing performances of Ritchie and Atsu may well see him handed game time later on.
