Newcastle fans knew this day would come one day – a disappointing performance from Mikel Merino.
The Spaniard, who is on loan from Borussia Dortmund, struggled to have the same impact as he has done in his recent outings, as Brighton looked to nullify his threat from the centre of the park.
He still demonstrated his impressive energy and tenacity, with several tackles and a niggling presence to the Brighton players.
