Much like Merino, fans would have been dreading the day that Matt Ritchie failed to live up to his usual high standards.
Unfortunately for Benitez and his side, that day was Sunday.
His passing accuracy was well below par, his deliveries from set plays were uncharacteristically poor and he just failed to show the same creative spirit as he has done so much this season.
