A playmaker is crucial to the way Newcastle operate on the counter attack, and a player with Perez’s qualities ought to carry the job efficiently.
Unfortunately the game seemed to pass the Spaniard by at times, and when he did find the ball at his feet, there were few options to try and advance up the field.
He was replaced by Isaac Hayden on the hour mark after an ineffectual display, but that comes down to the quality of Chelsea stifling Newcastle rather than the former Tenerife man’s own performance.
