The Republic of Ireland international is meant to be the calming, reliable figure at the back among a lack of experience among his team mates.
However he looked to follow in the footsteps of his compatriots with a shaky display against the Blues, struggling to dominate the attack and looking second best for much of the clash.
Newcastle are really lacking the presence of Jamaal Lascelles, whose leadership qualities are evidently second to none among the Magpies’ squad, and Rafa Benitez will be desperate to welcome him back, perhaps at the expense of Clark.
